Going (mostly) Green

I am quite excited to have picked up this neat little bag for free! An issue of Newsweek from this spring had an ad from Target that allowed you to send in a used plastic Target bag and get a free tote. The totes are made from the melted plastic bags. How cool! I have been trying very hard lately to use our cloth bags when shopping, but the hardest thing is to remember to bring them along. Now I also have this cool tote to take shopping.

I was also pretty jazzed up about plugging our phone chargers into a power strip. It saves so much more than leaving the chargers plugged into the wall and constantly using energy.

But, there are some things we just can't go green with. Like cloth diapers. We've had to use paper towels in place of baby wipes for the last couple days. Jack is teething and has a pretty bad diaper rash. The first few times that we used the regular wipes he had tears streaming down his little face. I felt so bad for him. We contemplated using washcloths, but just couldn't bring ourselves to wipe poop on our washcloths. So we used really wet paper towels, which seemed to do the trick. I know that people who use them only use them as wipes (and not also as washcloths), but we couldn't quite do it.

I promise I'll keep using my totes though!

Good for you on the totes! I keep mine in my car, all stuffed in side the biggest cloth bag, so that I just always have them when I get to the store.

Also, I'm pretty much with you on not being able to use washcloths. We never had to make that decision, but I don't think I'd be opposed to designating four (?) cheap washcloths for that purpose. That's what they had us use in the hospital, I remember, when Rye was born.

Did you use cloth diapers? I've been reading a lot about them lately and wish we would have used them for Jack. It's almost too late now as the cost wouldn't help us out much.

They had you use washcloths as wipes in the hospital?

I like the idea of keeping the totes in the car...

We use reusable bags too. I would love to use cloth diapers, but I really don't want to clean them myself.

Our youngest had sensitive skin so we made our own wipes.

Recipe here.

Don't forget you still have to shut the power strip off or you're still using the energy. Woohoo for reusable bags! I keep them and a collapsible basket in the car.

I've been doing more and more research on cloth diapers. There are too many stores here in town not to give it a try. It'll be interesting, but what a money saver and eco-friendly thing to do! If it fails miserably, you'll know. ;)

Christy - Cleaning the cloth diapers would definitely be a downer... but it'd be okay if you figured some sort of efficient (and clean) system.

jp - Thanks for the link. We may give those a try.

Katie - Oh yeah, we shut off the power strip. I think you should give cloth diapers a try! Then you can help me use them when we have baby #2! (Which will be a while...)

I love the bag!! We have a bunch of those totes that we keep in the car, but not a lot of people use them around here so the cashiers always act inconvenienced when we ask to use them. Still, it's worth it.

I think cloth diapers are great. I wish we would have started using them a long time ago, it would have saved a ton of $ with two little ones back to back.
