Halloween '18

Here are our little Harley Quinn and Jedi Knight.

We went trick-or-treating at the zoo the weekend before Halloween. It was a great evening and the kids had a lot of fun seeing the nocturnal animals at night. The bats weren't quite as crazy in the Lied Jungle this year, but they were still pretty active. Also, the Star Wars friends were out and about, so the kids got some pictures with them.

Carving pumpkins time! Both kids were able to help a lot more independently this year.  They are growing up so fast!

Halloween night was a bit frigid. I was glad it was my turn to hand out candy! In fact, it was so cold that they were back in 30 minutes! In that time, I only had one trick-or-treater. It seems that most people were giving out tons of candy since it was so cold!!! The kids were happy to hand out candy and sort their loot even after only a short trick-or-treating run!

Girls Trip!!!

I got the most amazing chance to take a trip with a couple of my best girlfriends in October! We went  to Nashville for essentially a 3-day trip and it was the most amazing experience ever!! I can't wait to go back to Nashville again. We left on a Friday and caught an early morning flight from Omaha and then had a connecting flight in Charlotte, NC before landing in Nashville, TN by early afternoon. Laura lives in Kentucky, so she drove there and picked Christy and I up at the airport. After settling in to our hotel in Brentwood, we headed downtown to Broadway Ave. to check out the atmosphere. After parking, we walked right past the Ryman on our way to Broadway. We checked out the tickets for the night and after not being able to decide, we bought some tickets for Cody Jinks from a guy on the street. It ended up being an amazing show! He is my new favorite musician!!!  After the show, we hit the nightlife and enjoyed live music and a few drinks.

We had pre-purchased tickets for the Grand Ole Opry tour and show, so after sleeping in (sans-kids)... it was marvelous... we headed to the Grand Ole Opry for our tour. The area where the show is now held isn't exactly earth-shattering and pretty much a typical mall atmosphere. The tour and show were great though!

Here are some pics from our tour. Hearing the history behind the show and the rooms where the artists prepare was pretty amazing. We left the Opry area after our tour and headed back to Broadway   for dinner at The Distillery. Then we came back for the show, which was even more entertaining knowing the background of how everything works!

Saturday also happened to be Christy's birthday, so after the Grand Ole Opry show, we headed back to Broadway for some drinks and birthday fun! We ended up at a place called the Nashville Cowboy. The best part about Nashville is that there is live music everywhere and the music is good!!! Just drinking some beers and listening to music made for a great time.

Sunday was our last day in Nashville and we decided to do something a little different. We took a tour of the Belle Meade Plantation, which has a rich history between the Meade and Jackson families in Tennessee. It included a wine tasting at the end, so that was a bonus!

Food and drinks were great pretty much everywhere we went in Nashville too. On Saturday morning, we found a place called the Barista Parlor where I had a whiskey caramel latte. No alcohol... too early in the morning for this girl, but it was delicious! Along with Jack's BBQ and The Distillery, both on Broadway, we also found a place called The Flipside Restaurant. It was a retro place that served all different types of different chicken dinners. After our chicken dinners Sunday evening and some ice cream at Jeni's, we headed back to the hotel to chill. We were able to enjoy some breakfast at the Puffy Muffin on Monday morning before heading to the airport again. So many memories were made in that short time and it was so much fun! These two ladies can make anything fun and I can't wait to go on a trip with them again soon!

Fall Activities -- Busy!

Our Fall was jam-packed full of activities! Along with usual teaching duties, I was also working on a 150-hour practicum for my graduate program. Eek! I'm glad that I was able to balance some fun with these kiddos too. Jack got to be part of his school's science team. He studied hard for several weeks leading up to it. It was held at the zoo and his team placed 2nd out of over 30 teams!  Woot!

Maddy started soccer this fall. She had been talking about it for almost a year, so her persistence paid off with her first season. She loved it and is excited to play again! Her favorite position was goalie and we had to gently remind her multiple times to let other kids play that position.  :)  Jack played fall baseball too... I'm not sure where his pictures are of that though.  Sorry, buddy.

We had our annual leaf piling pictures and playing in the front yard too! The kids are getting big... please don't mind Jack's hair. He was reaaaaaally needing a haircut!

Our annual trip to Vala's pumpkin patch was a girls trip instead. Bryan and Jack went to a Wilco concert, so Maddy and I took a couple friends instead. It was a fun, yet exhausting evening and so fun to be with friends!

Maddy's kindergarten class went to the Bellevue Berry Farm just a couple weeks later! I volunteered to go on the trip and was in a group with Jack's 4th grade teacher. Oh, what fun!

Jack's 10th Birthday Party

With Jack's love of Harry Potter, he wanted a HP themed party this year. And, it was soooo much fun to throw!  We made homemade wands for each kid using chopsticks, hot glue, and brown acrylic paint. Each kid also got a homemade bag of "Every Flavor Beans." The bags were a mix of mostly good jelly beans and one or two nasty ones!  The cake was fun to make and was modeled off the one Hagrid gave Harry for his birthday. There was a photo booth, ice cub divinations drinks, and Harry Potter foods.

The photo wall was a lot of fun... for the whole gang!

What's a Harry Potter party without a game of Quidditch. We used hula hoops, that happened to be gold to make the goals. A small foam soccer ball was used along with water balloons for the bludgers. If you got hit with a water balloon, you had to freeze for 10 seconds and pass the play onto one of your teammates. It got competitive so much so that at times I was worried someone was going to get hurt!

After a lot of running around, it was time to cool off with a Divinations drink and a round of "Bean Boozled" (HP style). Everyone enjoyed snack and cake and Jack opened presents. Before we knew it, the party was over! Jack's best gifts... a Cubs jersey from us and the Lego batwing. It was a good birthday for this boy!!!

Jack is 10!

It seems nearly impossible that Jack turned 10 in August! The pictures really show how much he has changed over the last year. His hair has changed as he decided he wanted to try the longer style instead. It looks really nice, when he combs it.  :)  He still really loves Harry Potter and has read every book multiple times! Legos are still a huge part of his life too. Star Wars and baseball are also in his list of favorites. When he had a rough bit of third grade and was grounded for a while, he got into origami. He especially loved Star Wars origami! We got him a used iPhone this year to use for texting us when he is at home. He sends funny messages to us every once in awhile and loved taking pictures on it during vacation!  Love you, Jacki boy!

Summer 2017

2017 has been such a good year for us that apparently I couldn't get any blog updates done! :) But I am still going to work on recording all the fun memories we have made.

My last post left off in the middle of all our summer fun. Here is what the rest of our summer looked like... Fun times with friends for both kids and their cousins!

Of course, there was plenty of zoo time including enjoying the new splash park.

The kids LOVED the new addition to our zoo, the Children's Adventure Trails!

Jack spent a week at Hummel Day Camp. This was his 2nd year and he enjoyed it just as much as last year! Even though he earned the muddiest camper award again this year, he didn't come home nearly as muddy as the first year!

We took a family trip with my sister and her girls to the Sarpy County Fair in August. We reminisced about our childhood fair days and the kids greatly enjoyed the midway!

This is old news... but I said good-bye to the Rav4, which was kind of hard to do. We bought a Honda CR-V in April and enjoyed traveling in it throughout the summer!

And as the calendar usually falls, I enjoyed my birthday right before the start of the school year.  I was spoiled with homemade cards, a Lego version of me doing my workout (a favorite gift), and the kids doing a "38" workout with me! Then the school year started and a former student spoiled me even more!

Lastly, here are some random pics of our spunky girl throughout the summer with various adventures!

Then... it was the start of another school year! Jack started 4th grade and Maddy was into kindergarten. Jack wants to be an engineer or baseball player and Maddy wants to be a geologist or scientist!

First Day of School ~ I took the morning off to take part in the traditional first day of school donuts. And, then they were off to start the year. They are getting so big!  Time literally feels like it is flying by.

Back it Up - Part 2!

More spring excitement at La Casa Redemske was the start of baseball season. This was Maddy's first year and she was beyond excited to get out there! She played Coach Pitch on the "Sun Leopard Duck Bananas" team. (They couldn't agree on a yellow name, obviously)! She even wore her full baseball gear for the first few practices.

Maddy was a good little hitter almost always hitting the pitch instead of the T. She enjoyed getting dirty although sometimes she played more in the dirt than paying attention to the game. But, I guess that's how little kid baseball works. Her favorite position to play was pitcher, standing right next to the other team's coach!

Awards night. She was so stinkin' proud of that trophy. It was a lot of fun getting to coach her team too.

Jacky-baseball... as he has so fondly been nicknamed. This was year 2 of minors baseball and he improved so much over the winter! He was also excited to get out there and play. When your dad is the head coach, you get to pick the jersey color too. Bright!  He is a fantastic base runner, which is definitely his strength.

Jack's favorite positions to play this year were shortstop and catcher. His favorite play was the line drive he hit down the first base line. It was a fun season to watch him grow and continue to make ball field friends. Some of his teammates he has played with multiple years, so they are building strong friendships!

And... to top off a great season, he got to play on an All-Star Team for Keystone Little League. He played hard and had a great hit for an RBI in the first game of the tournament!

Other spring happenings... this old guy turned 40! :) The kids made him some awesome cards and we took him shopping for his own Apple Watch to celebrate! We also celebrated by having a backyard fire and spending the Memorial Day Weekend enjoying our outdoor space.

June brought a wedding that was so much fun! My aunt remarried and her along with my cousins looked so beautiful! It was such a beautiful and fun evening.

The wedding was also a great reason to use Rent the Runway again! I love that website for fancy dresses!

We made it to Lauritzen Gardens twice this spring! The first time was for the Lego Exhibit. The Lego creations are just amazing.

The second time was for the Great Stinko! This plant has never bloomed in Nebraska and there were lines and lines to go see it. It didn't really stink much, but it sure was a popular attraction.

The start of summer also brought summer camps for the kids. Jack went to UNO for Aim for the Stars camp where he learned about weather. The second week he did a half-day camp on engineering, machines, and food through Metro Community College. This was his draw-bridge design that he was super proud of!

Meanwhile, Maddy went to nature camp at Hitchcock Nature Center in Iowa. She went for half-days too for a full week and loved it! I sat on the observation deck, drank coffee, and worked on my graduate work.  It worked out for all of us!  :)

Omaha Children's Museum: It has been updated and the kids checked it all out! Always a fun time!

One of the new updates is a tinker lab, where kids can just make things. So great for the mind!

We also hit up the Durham Museum for their Spy Exhibit. That was a great time for me as well! It was fun trying to solve the mystery and have the kids look for clues.

We have made it to the 4th of July! We went to HomeRun Derby again this year, which had rain, cotton candy, and big smiles! Lily had to be wrapped up to calm her down as the fireworks really worked her up this year. We now have a Thunder Vest for future years! The day also included a water fight, beer, good food, and a fireworks show put on by the Redemske clan.

We snuck away for a much needed date on July 5th to see Jason Isbell in concert at Sumtur Amphitheater. What an amazing show! It may be one of my favorite concerts ever.

Then we left the next day to go camping and Lewis & Clark Recreation Area with my dad and my sister and her family. There was lots of playing in the dirt, a captured turtle, fishing, swimming in the river, and peaceful breakfasts by the river. Unfortunately, there was also a broken phone (mine). It was a great time!

July has been quite busy as the kids had two weeks of swimming lessons right after we got back from camping! This was the last day of lessons when they get to jump off the diving boards. Maddy wasn't sure about it at first, but she did it!

I am so thankful for my sis as she watched the kids for several hours each day so I could teach at a week-long HAL camp at my school. That busy week included swimming lessons in the morning, HAL camp in the afternoon, and VBS in the evening! After that busy week, we left for vacation in Chicago!!! On one of the days, Sarah took the kids to see the 4-H farm animals at the library. Woot!

Our final big activity before vacation... Vacation Bible School. I volunteered all week, so I got to see the kids as they did the different activities each day. I had the three year-olds, which are equally fun & exhausting!  :)

And then... Chicago! So here we are and tomorrow is August 1st! Time for school to start. The summer has really flown by. To be honest, it feels like 2017 has flown by so far too.
