Our {Mini} Vacation

We took a mini vacation this weekend to Kansas City. We decided awhile back that with a crazy summer full of family activities (i.e. weddings & babies - including saving for our own), that we would just take a little trip this summer. It was very short, but still a lot of fun! Way back in March we checked out the Royals baseball schedule and saw that they were playing the Cubs at the end of June. Sweet! So we ordered our tickets. That's how our vacation started - with a night game vs. the Cubs. It was a fun game to watch and would have been even better if the Cubs would have won. {Sigh.}

These are our two family photos at the game. Jack was being a stinker and was refusing to smile or even show his eyes at times. We were hot, sweaty, and hungry at the time, so his expression captures the moment perfectly.

A few more pictures later on.... Jack was a much happier camper after it cooled off and he had some ice cream. It's amazing how busy he is... I think we left our seats just about every other inning to get something or go somewhere. But the game did go quickly!

Daddy & Jack having fun at Science City

We stayed in a hotel Saturday night and enjoyed some pool time Sunday morning. After showers and packing up, we headed out for lunch and an afternoon at Science City. It was an entertaining place, but I don't think we'd go back until kids are much older. There was a lot of reading and not a ton of stuff for littler kids. The model trains we saw in Union Station were the hit of the day with Jack and we happened upon those by accident as we were trying to find our way out of the building!

The trip home was probably the most stressful part. First off, because of the flooded Missouri River and having to detour off I-29, it took a lot longer than normal to travel between Omaha & Kansas City. The hectic part came when we stopped for supper. Jack had just woken up and was extremely CRANKY. It took us several minutes to calm him down enough to take him into Burger King. Once we figured out what he wanted to eat, I stepped up to order only to find out they were out of french fries, chicken nuggets, and apple fries. The latter two being Jack's entire meal! Who runs out of french fries & chicken nuggets???? So we loaded Jack back up and headed across the street to McDonald's. Phew. Food was eaten with little incident.

But then to finish off the trip, we drove right into a huge storm hitting the area. It was a bit nerve-wracking with radio reports of possible hail & 60 mph winds. We detoured off and stopped at Bryan's shop to wait for the storm to pass. We finally made it home, got ready for bed, and all hit the pillows hard. We were quite worn out. It was a fun little trip & despite the stresses on the way home, I wish we could take a few more of these {mini} vacations more often!
