Today was an early dismissal day at school. It was a very quick day with just 15 minute classes. It doesn't allow for much to get accomplished. Amidst a crazy day, I was dealing with a very bright, female student who is leaning more and more toward gang activity. It has been on my mind lately and I've been worried about her. So as the kids were driving me NUTS today, I was thinking, "Why do I do this to myself? Why am I a teacher?"
Thankfully that answer came to me two different times today. Shortly after the kids were dismissed, two former students who are now sophomores in high school stopped by to visit. They were anxious to share all the great activities they were involved in and how much they missed middle school. It was great to see those two young men and how they've grown over the last few years.
Then as I was relaxing during my afternoon off, I was checking facebook and had a friend request from a former student who is now a freshman in college!! Yikes. That made me feel old. We chatted online for about 25 minutes. It was so nice to talk to her and see what her and my other former students are doing. I hope I get to talk to her again.
And both of those gave me the thanks I needed for being a teacher. Those chats came at just the right time.

WOW! That is really neat.
What a wonderful reminder! Isn't it amazing when the answer to something comes just at the right time? I always love those moments.
