There has been love in the air since the first of February! This is Jack and Maddy making Valentines for family early in February. They were supposed to be bubble paintings, but ended up being more of a colorful paper. The idea was to put dish soap into paint (with a little water), blow bubbles and use the bubbles to paint with. We tried to make hearts out of cardboard and paint around them, but it didn't turn out very well. The paper ended up pretty though!
There was a little joke about Valentine's Day this year... it being on a Saturday, I wanted to DO something, but wasn't keen on eating out or anything like that. So Bryan stepped up to the plate and made it a fun day! The morning started with me being utterly confused when I got up and nobody was home. :/ Well, the minions and Bryan had escaped to get me coffee and everyone donuts for breakfast! We get the kids a little something for Valentine's Day each year, but I wasn't feeling the buying a toy vibe, so we made a coupon booklet for them (along with some small treats). It was pretty fun to make and included coupons like a meal out of their choice, extended bed time, mommy and daddy pick up their toys, etc. It will probably cost us more money in the long run, but it will be fun! And we ended the day with more fun foods as Bryan put his pizza making skills to work with the kids. They liked getting to choose their toppings and Maddy especially liked the heart shape. Jack wasn't into the heart idea and opted for a round one instead (although he made an interesting choice with bacon and bbq sauce)!
In continuing with our love theme, Bryan and I will be celebrating our 15th anniversary this summer. This means two things... one - we are getting old and two - we were just babies when we got married. We're hoping to take a decent family vacation this summer, so we are going to do our anniversary celebrations in parts. Part one was a quick trip to Minnesota for a Jeff Tweedy concert. So. much. fun! The kids stayed with the grandparents and we got to do a little shopping, enjoy some awesome music, and stayed overnight in downtown Minneapolis! Wish we could do it again soon!!!
We are LOVING the warmer weather around here too! We have been soaking up the extra light in the evenings and both kids have been putting in some time riding their bikes. Along with that, we have already started the season of injuries! Maddy fell and scraped her hand on one of the first nights on her bike. Oops!
Pi day of the century was just last Saturday and I got to spend it with this awesome crew at a math competition. The team also took third place in their division, which they were beyond excited about!!! The pictures below that were from our pi day celebration at school the day before. We always do fun activities related to circles, including hula hoop competitions, memorizing digits of pi, cup stacking, and dodge ball. I love pi day! This year, I added an extra project to the mix related to random acts of kindness (RAK). Inspired by the Secret Kindness Agents and with the amazing help of Mama Beast (author Ferial Pearson), I did a Kindness project called "Kindness Makes the World Go 'Round." The kids were challenged to varying acts of kindness for 5 weeks and after journaling about their random acts, were rewarded with tickets for pi day. The tickets simply gave them a chance to win prizes that day. The kindness project was beyond awesome! My estimation was that over 350 acts of kindness were done by my students. They amazed me with their caring ideas of how to spread kindness too. They had fun coming up with secret agent names, which then I posted on the team's bulletin board. I can't wait to do it again next year!
